On the first full day of my group tour with Timeless Tours, we went to Saqqara and the Pyramids of Giza. I’d of course already been the Pyramids, but who can complain about seeing one of the wonders of the world a second time?
Saqqara is the site of the first constructed building on Earth: the step pyramid. This gorgeous structure was built for an unknown Pharoah, and is accompanied by a gorgeous Temple.
Saqqara is located in the Giza Governate, and is an easy trip from the Pyramids. The entrance fee is 120 EGP (or 60 EGP for students with an ID). I highly recommend a visit. When we went, our group was the only one there, but I think that it becomes more crowded later in the day.
After Saqqara, we headed to see the Great Pyramids. This time, I entered through the main entrance and I can confirm that it’s a much more peaceful experience to use the side one. Through the main entrance, it’s a lot more crowded and you will have to navigate through salespeople. I didn’t find any of them too aggressive though. All of them respected a firm “La’a Shukram” (no thank you).
The great thing about being on a group tour is having new friends to discover amazing things with! There’s something so special about being able to share such experiences.
Later that day, we escaped the resort (much to the dismay of our tourguide) in search of a supermarket. Google maps confidently led us to the middle of a field, in the back of a neighborhood. Perhaps there will be a supermarket there someday?
Who would have predicted that this wrong turn would become a highlight of our trip? Egyptian hospitality is out of this world, and as we wandererd the neighborhood a lovely lady invited us to tea with her family. We called her “La Presidenta” because she had 11 children and was the mom of the street. She taught us Arabic, made some traditional tea, and invited us to try some Lift (I think turnips?). It was an incredibly special experience.
As the sun fell, we hurried to get back to the hotel for the upcoming 16 hour bus to Aswan. It was another amazing day in Egypt!
